Figures
My figure paintings are based on drawings of people I observe passing by in the street — sometimes drawn a few days after the event, sometimes several years later.
The objective is to find a graphic or painterly equivalent to what I saw or felt about the person seen. I think of the pavement as being a ‘democratic stage’, where performances from the barely visible to the grand are played out each day. I am interested in creating moments of recognition and shared experience through composition, pose, and the physicality of paint.
